When the French chose this city
as their administrative center in the early 20th century, it was laid out
with wide boulevards, public parks and imposing civic buildings.
Most places of interest are within walking distance of each other.
The Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993, is among the largest in the
world, boasting the tallest minaret. Some 30,000 of Morocco’s craftspeople
labored for six years to create this most remarkable place of worship
Shopping
Handicrafts, copperware, pottery, embroidered clothing, carpets, and
silver jewelry are of major interest. Bargain hard in the souks. The
major shopping area is found around the United Nations Square and the
Habbous Quarter.
Cuisine
Traditional dishes include roast mutton, harira (a spicy bean soup), and
touajen tagine (a meat and chicken stew). Some of the best restaurants
are found along Boulevard Mohammed el Hansali and on the way to the
beach resorts.
Please Note: Stay away from salads and raw vegetables. Make sure meat
is cooked thoroughly and avoid local dairy products. Drink only bottled
water and beverages.
Other Sights
Casablanca is covered on Tour CAS-1. If not participating,
you can take the Silversea complimentary shuttle to the United Nations
Square and explore on your own. For excursions, try Marrakech or Rabat.
Casablanca’s beaches and exclusive suburbs are located to the east of the
city along the Boulevard de la Corniche. This is a very trendy area,
lined with four-star hotels, restaurants and bars.
Golf
Casablanca Golf Club. The Casablanca Golf Club has an 18-hole,
7011-yard championship Cal Olson designed course.
Royal Dar es Salaam. Commissioned by King Hassan II in 1970,
Robert Trent Jones, Sr., designed this highly acclaimed course. Located
in a forest among old Roman ruins, lavish grounds of mimosa, banana,
cypress, eucalyptus, and towering cork trees line the fairways. |
